The city of Bridgeport makes up the core of the Greater Bridgeport area. Bridgeport is the 5th largest city in New England and is part of the Greater New York City Combined Statistical Area. The city ranks as the 41st largest urban area within the nation.

Among the most famous residents' within the area is the circus-promoter and one time mayor P.T. Barnum. He has constructed 3 houses in the city and throughout the winter months, houses his circus in town.

Other than parts of Brooklawn and Black Rock, that were initially part of the Fairfield Township, the city of Bridgeport was first a member of the Stratford Township. Somewhere between 1639 and 1665, the first English settlement on the west bank of the mouth of the Pequonnock River was established. This particular settlement was called Pequonnock. Sometime before 1777, the village was renamed Newfield. Since more people settled towards the West and further inland, the region officially became known as Stratfield in 1701. It is speculated that this name came from its spot between the existing townships of Stratford and Fairfield.

Bridgeport was a center of privateering in the American Revolution. In 1800, the village of Newfield was chartered as a borough of Bridgeport. The town of Bridgeport and sections of Stratfield became integrated during 1821. During the year 1836, Bridgeport was finally chartered as a city.

The Frisbie Pie Company makes their home within the city of Bridgeport. Some have even argued that the city of Bridgeport is truly the birthplace of the Frisbee. The first Subway Restaurant was opened in the North End portion of the city during the year 1965.

The core of the city's economy for a long time was in manufacturing and trade, however more recently, the service-producing sector with business and health services have grown to become a significant factor in the local economy. Bridgeport is trying to expand its manufacturing sector into the international marketplace. Also, the city of Bridgeport is regarded as one of the most famous financial centers within New England.
